Ca.1500 AD, Late Medieval German. Large iron axe head with heavy, approximately triangular blade, projecting guard and circular socket. Heavy axes like this example were intended to provide the necessary cutting power to penetrate the heavy plate armour with which they were contemporary. Good condition; on a custom-made stand. Size: H:140mm/L:160mm/H:105mm; (without stand); 607g. Provenance: From an old British collection formed in the 1990s; previously acquired in Germany.
