LETTER OF RECOGNITION SENT TO SIR MOSES MONTEFIORE BY THE GABBA’EI ERETZ YISRAEL OF VILNA 1851.

Historic letter of recognition sent by the three gabbaim in Vilna for the fund for the poor of Eretz Yisrael to Sir Moses Montefiore. Signed by Rabbi Chaim Nachman Parnes – Head of the Committee, The Maggid Rabbi Zalman Ze’ev of Vilna, Rabbi Avraham Dov Strashun – secretary of the Committee – the Nessi’ei Eretz Yisrael of Vilna, through whom all funds collected in Lithuania for the poor in Eretz Yisrael were distributed. Vilna 1851.

Rabbi Chaim Nachman Parnes, born in Dubna and married (I) the daughter of Rabbi Efrayim Zalman Margulies of Brody – Head of the Committee, and (II) a daughter of Reb Leib Pesseles – a leading figure in the Vilna community. He too became a prominent and influential figure in Vilna, serving as Gabbai of the Great Synagogue and Chief Gabbai of the Eretz Yisrael funds.

Rabbi Zalman Ze’ev (1789-1867), son of Rabbi Yechezkel Feivel - Maggid of Vilna and author of Toldos Adam. Rabbi of Deretshin before succeeding his father as Maggid of Vilna. One of the leading Rabbis of Lithuania, who was involved in settling the dispute at the Volozhin Yeshiva in 1854.

Rabbi Avraham Dov Strashun (1788-1855), Secretary of the Vilna Jewish Community and Torah scholar.
