LETTER OF SUPPORT FOR FUNDRAISING MISSION OF RABBI YISSACHAR ABULAFIA OF TEVERYA . CONSTANTINOPLE 5525 [1765].

Very rare printed broadside in support of the mission of Rabbi Yissachar Abulafia of Teverya, signed by the ‘Pekidei Teverya’ [officers of the Teverya Jewish community]: Shmuel Yehuda, Moshe ben Yaakov Ashkenazi and Avraham Kamondo, and by the Rabbis of Constantinople, Rabbi Avraham Meyuchas, Rabbi Refael Yitzchak Yerushalmi and Rabbi Shlomo Alfandari.

The letter describes the suffering of the Teverya community: “the repeated suffering of our brethren the rabbis of the holy city of Teverya ... the earthquake felt all over the Holy Land destroyed the Synagogue ... and there was danger to life, and the pious men of the holy city had to wander from place to place ... the synagogue gates were closed ...”

Yaari, Sheluchei Eretz Yisrael p. 516 reproduces a similar letter, sent to the Pisa community, from the only known copy, in the Bodleian Library, and gives further details on this fundraising mission.
