LETTER OF SUPPORT FOR RABBI SHMUEL HACOHEN, EMISSARY ON BEHALF OF YESHIVATH KENESETH YISRAEL IN HEBRON. LIVORNO 5548 [1788].

Very rare printed broadside with moving account of conditions suffered by the scholars of the Keneseth Yisrael Yeshiva in Hebron and of the mission of Rabbi Shmuel HaCohen to cover a debt of 4000 florins.

“It is now 31 years that we are here in the city of our forefathers ... the cost of supporting the Torah scholars each year is approximately 1000 florins ... and there has been a famine for the past five years affecting all types of food ... the interest [on funds borrowed] rises every year ... and has now reached 4000 florins...”

In return for support, the scholars undertake to pray for donors at the tomb of the Patriarchs and at the graves of Yishai – the father of King David, Avner ben Ner, Asniel ben Kenaz and Gad HaChozeh.

This letter was sent to the community of Modena in Italy. For details of this fundraising mission, see Yaari, Sheluchei Eretz Yisrael p. 593.

The letter is signed by the following Hebron rabbis: R. Nechemya Gedlilya, R. Ahron Peretz, R. Yosef ben Archa, R. Avraham Nissim Bajayo, R. Eliezer HaCohen and R. Moshe Peretz.
