"Bark 'D. Chapin' of Boston, N.D. Rose, Master, in a gale off the coast of England, Sep 29, 1869". Oil on canvas, signed lower left and marked "Leghorn" (Livorno, Italy), captioned and dated lower right, in what may be the original gilt flyspeck molded frame, OS: 27 1/2" x 39 1/2", SS: 21 1/2" x 33 1/2". Cleaned, relined and retouched, multiple repaired tears. The Bark 'D. Chapin' was built in 1869 in Portsmouth, NH. She was wrecked north of the Bermudas in Dec. 1888, stranding the crew of eleven for ten days in an open boat with no sail, food or water. Seven survived. Provenance: From Private Collection, Harpswell, ME.
