Mignot was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, was sent by his family to study in the Netherlands. After moving to New York on his return, he went to Ecuador for four months with Frederic Edwin Church. From that point on, his landscapes drew more on his imagination. He moved to England when the Civil War began, died there in 1870 after contracting smallpox in Paris during the Franco-Prussian war, aged 39.
