LUMIERE AUGUSTE & LOUIS: Auguste Lumiere (1862-1954) & Louis Lumiere (1864-1948) The Lumiere brothers were French Pioneer Filmmakers, Manufacturers of photography equipment. Their public screening on December 1895 is regarded as the birth of cinema. Two good A.Ls.S., `Aug.te Lumiere´, and `L. Lumiere´, dated 16th November 1908 and 7th August 1906 by August and Louis respectively, both to Monsieur Mariani, in French. The first being a one page 4.5 x 3.5 card, Auguste stating `I thank you a thousand times my dear Mr. Mariani for your kind congratulations and I ask you to accept, with the expression of my most lively and sincere gratitude, the very affectionate friendship of the whole family and especially those of your most devoted..´ The second being a four pages autograph letter, 8vo, on Louis Lumiere´s printed stationery of 262 Cours Gambetta at Lyon. Louis Lumiere states in part `I receive your kind sending and don't really know how to thank you for so much kindness. It would be very pleasant for me to show you better than with banal phrases all the grateful friendship I have for you and I do not know how to go about it ´ further saying `I do hope you had a good trip back and that you do not suffer too much the Parisian heat. My little family stayed at Evian, the journey in such a beautiful country is one of the most favourable for Suzanne´s health, and here I am alone at home as my brother is also gone..´, and referring to the Lumiere Brothers manufactures states `The bustle of the factory is there, fortunately, to make me find the time shorter´ Both letters with some edges very slightly uneven, otherwise g to VG, 2 Angelo Mariani (1838-1914) French chemist from the island of Corsica. Between 1863 and 1868 Mariani started marketing a coca wine called Vin Tonique Mariani (with Peruvian coca) which was made from Bordeaux wine and coca leaves. The Vin Mariani was a coca wine and patent medicine created in the 1860s. Advertisements for Vin Mariani claimed that it would restore health, strength, energy and vitality. Popes Leo XIII and Pius X were both Vin Mariani drinkers, the first appearing on a poster endorsing the wine and awarding a Vatican gold medal to Mariani for creating it. Edison claimed it helped him stay awake longer. Ulysses S. Grant drank Vin Mariani while writing his memoirs, and other notables who endorsed Vin Mariani include Emile Zola, Charles Gounod, Sarah Bernhardt, etc..
