Lady Reading - Hans Thoma (1839 - 1924) - 19th Century Romantic School

Oil on canvas, measurements: 40 x 35 cm, framed measurements: 60 x 55 cm. German painter Born in the Black Forest, Germany. After beginning a life as a clock painter, he entered the Karlsruhe academy in 1859, where he received classes from Schirmer and Des Coudres. Later he studied and worked, without great success, in Düsseldorf, Paris, Italy, Munich and Frankfurt am Main. He followed the style of the early German masters, particularly Altdorfer and Cranach. Many of his works dealt especially with themes of the Christian faith and several of them are currently part of two private collections located in Liverpool. A portrait of the artist, and two other works, "The Guardian of the Valley" and "Idyll of Spring", are located in the Dresden gallery; "Eve in Paradise" and "Peaceful Valley" in the Frankfurt am Main museum. Other important works of the artist are "Paradise", "Christ and Nicodemus", "The Prodigal Son", "Flight into Egypt", "Charon", "Pieta", "Adam and Eve", "Solitude", "Tritons", as well as other landscapes and portraits. He also made several lithographs and drawings, and some murals, located in a café in Frankfurt am Main and in Mr Pringsheimer's music room in Munich. Hans Thoma died in Karlsruhe on November 7, 1924 at the age of 85. Origin: Valencian private collection.
