Large Apulian Red Figure Lekanis w/ Ladies of Fashion
Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A fabulous and sizable wheel-thrown lekanis, with a similarly-shaped body and lid which create an attractive symmetrical appearance. The lower body boasts a wide basin with an interior lip meant to hold a lid, a pair of impressed parallel grooves coursing around the exterior, and a pair of parabolic handles, all atop a wide discoid foot. The accompanying lid has a sloping body, a squat lower rim, and a circular handle with a radiating floral motif in the recessed tondo. The lid exhibits a pair of red-figure 'lady of fashion' heads, each with an elegant visage, kekryphalos hairstyles, and fugitive white pigment accentuating their finery and coiffures. The heads are separated by a large pair of stylized palmettes, and the lower rim boasts a register of cresting waves. Areas of jet-black glaze form the outline of the red-figure details and have developed reflective layers of silvery iridescence. Size (w/ lid): 10.9" W x 7.5" H (27.7 cm x 19 cm).
Lidded lekanides were cosmetic containers, frequently given by fathers to brides on their wedding day. The lady of fashion motif complements this - often thought to represent a young woman on her wedding day. Each lady wears a kekryphalos hairstyle, earrings, and a beaded necklace. This vessel has a very interesting iridescent patina that gives it a sparkling appearance.

Condition Report: Lid repaired from multiple pieces with small chips, light restoration, resurfacing, and overpainting along break lines. Lid and lower body have minor nicks and abrasions, light fading to glaze coloration and original pigmentation, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and silvery iridescence throughout.
