Large Egyptian Green/Blue Glazed Steatite Scarab With Baboons Adoring Bes - 23mm length

C. 1939-1760 BC - Middle Kingdom A nice large green/blue glazed steatite scarab amulet with hieroglyphs to base of Bes, an ancient Egyptian deity worshipped as a protector of households, mothers and children and childbirth. Bes combines characteristics of a dwarf and a lion. He stands with hands resting on his thighs with a tail hanging between his legs, and wears a headdress consisting of large plumes. On either side are baboons with sun discs above, raising both hands towards the deity Bes in a gesture of adoration. Some chips to edge otherwise good colour with good, clear hieroglyphs.
