Large / Fine Luristan Bronze Cloak Pin - Stylized Bulls

Ancient Near East, modern day Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 700 BCE. A large cast bronze cloak pin with an intricate upper terminal in the form of two rearing bulls surrounded by stylized arms. The form is reminiscent of the "master of animals" standards for which Luristan is famous, and which are believed to be symbols of human control over beasts. Bulls, meanwhile, were symbols of virility and power. Size: 2.7" W x 11.75" H (6.9 cm x 29.8 cm); 12.05" H (30.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-Davis collection, Houston, Texas, acquired before 2013 from various auction houses in London and New York
