Large Holyland Byzantine Pottery Storage Jar

Near East / Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to 10th century CE. A wide-bodied, amphora-shaped vessel for storage and transport of goods. It has a thick neck and rim with twin strap handles emerging from the side of the neck to the tapered upper shoulder. Small bands of impressed decoration, mainly just wavy lines, are around the center body. A nice example of a utilitarian vessel. Size: 11.4" W x 15.25" H (29 cm x 38.7 cm)

Provenance: private Dallas, USA collection, acquired in 1992 from the Civilization Gallery collection

Condition Report: Small hole on underside with a tiny stress fracture radiating outward from it. Chip from rim and scratches, nicks, and chips from surface commensurate with age. Nice deposits on surface.
