Large antique Russian icon “John, the Baptist” from a Deesis. Hand-painted with oil on a composite of three wooden panels. The icon was created in the 19th century probably made in Western Russia (Today’s Belarus / Poland) For this, there is a unique style of painting that deviates somewhat from the standard of icon painting. Relatively detailed painting. Perfectly matched colour contrasts and accomplished shading. The icon has inscriptions. The inscriptions are clearly legible. The icon is in good condition with signs of wear commensurate with age (see photos) . Extremely detailed and eye-catching depiction of the saint. The painting has very authentic craquelure. Partial bumps and paint flaking present. In terms of woodworm holes, the woodworm is not active. Partial restorations are present. Very heavy and stable.
