Among the Bamileke and other ethnic groups, art objects reflected the status of their owner within society's hierarchy. Thus, the materials and shapes of the objects varied according to social rank. The Bamileke king, also called fon, guardian of soil fertility and protector of his subjects, was not considered mortal. Consequently, his funerals were joyful celebrations, with the fon simply retreating physically but always watching over his people from his new dwelling.
