Late-1940s Sunbeam Talbot 80/90 1:6 Scale Factory Scratch-Built Model
Location
| London, United Kingdom
This Talbot Sunbeam 80/90 is a truly bespoke circa 1950s Rootes factory scratch built one off machined example to the same build technique as the original cars, with all the steel sections welded rather than being silver soldered. The model was originally in the ownership of a member of the royal family before being gifted to the current owner.
This lovely example has been set up for tethered racing as it comes with working steering and no active suspension. Note under the bonnet, where fitted is thought to be a Type-10, 10cc Wizard engine. This was based on the Lapwing, with altered cylinder finning and cylinder head. It was intended for ‘full-bore’ race running in tethered cars, so the complex ignition and carburettor systems were abandoned for a simple needle valve and fixed points ignition, with power to the rear wheels. This set up was used extensively by the renowned Gerald Smith in his model making craft.
This unusual example has far more detail inside than other examples of the Roote’s prototype scale models. It is believed that less than five factory models were produced for Sunbeam Talbot in the late 1940s and 1950s. Note the ‘leather’ seats and moulded ‘Bakelite’ dashboard, carpeted floor, detailed door panels, chrome work and Perspex windows as well as a sliding sunroof and chromed wheels. This model measures approximately 25 inches in length and would benefit from servicing prior to mechanical use.
