Late 19th C. American Powder Horn w/ 1889 Bronze Penny

North America, United States, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An elegant antique powder horn comprised of a cow or ox horn body naturally curved to a tapered spout embellished with 2 raised bands near its end. The lovely hardwood base plug is adorned with a bronze British penny from 1889 surrounded by 4 brass bolts. Several more brass bolts encircle the periphery of the wooden plug, while a brass cap embellishes the tip. The body is additionally adorned by a lovely copper band, which likely served as a support, demonstrating the importance of this powder horn to its owner who was willing to fix it! Size: 10.375" L x 3" W (26.4 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Stein collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, acquired prior to 2010

Condition Report: Stable fissure on one side that has been reinforced by a brass band. Expected surface wear with nicks and abrasions. Otherwise, very nice with lovely patina.
