Late 19th C. Hawaiian Milo Wood Bowl

New World, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 1880s. A beautiful bowl skillfully carved from milo wood, a species native to Hawaii, with its exterior and interior polished to a high sheen. The vessel presents a rounded form with high walls that curve inward and then gently flare at the rim. In addition to this attractive form, the wood itself is inherently gorgeous, presenting a rich russet red hue, mesmerizing grain patterns, and warm lustrous age patina. Furthermore the butterfly shaped old repairs imbue the vessel with additional charm! Size: 9.55" W x 8.5" H (24.3 cm x 21.6 cm)

Condition Report: Three butterfly-shaped old wooden repairs on one side, with a few small areas of inactive insect damage near them. Underside also has some wooden pegs inserted. Interior has some shallow cracks that are not structural. Otherwise in lovely condition with a very rich, flowing patina.
