This work titled “Morgenlied” (Morning Song) - part of a series of the same name - revisits a traditional museum display system used for hanging paintings: the metal hanging rail.
Here, the artist uses the rods and hanging hooks to create an abstract linear composition on the wall, resembling a musical score. Through this double absence - the paintings that are not visible and the music that is not audible - Latifa Echakhch reveals the evocative power of the display device itself.
Latifa Echakhch represented Switzerland in the 59th Venice Biennale (2022). Her works are in many permanent collections, including those of Kunsthaus Zürich; LACMA, Los Angeles;
National Museum of Canada; MACBA, Barcelona; Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, François Pinault Collection, Paris/Venice; Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein; Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane; GAMeC, Bergamo.
The artist is represented by Pace Gallery, Kaufmann Repetto and Dvir Gallery.
Latifa Echakhch has been named winner of the 2013 Marcel Duchamp Prize.
