He is the artist-theorist behind the Mono-ha (“School of Things”) avant-garde movement, a Japanese artistic movement that developed in parallel with minimalist and radical movements. Mono-ha is often considered very close to the attitudes and choices that gave rise to Arte Povera in Europe. Lee Ufan’s sculptures are presented as juxtapositions of stones or wood gathered from nature and industrial materials, while his paintings tend toward a single mark, toward meditation and the evocation of emptiness.
