Lega wood mask, Democratic Republic of the Congo
A nice Lega wood mask from Democratic Republic of the Congo. Over 50 years in age, with remnants of black, red and white pigmentation. The features are well-carved in pleasing style. Masks such as this example were used by the Bwami society as initiation objects. They were not worn over the face but attached to the body, suspended from poles or hung on fences during initiation ceremonies. 11 1/2 x 5 1/4 in (29.2 x 13.3 cm). Mounted on custom metal stand. Ex Peterson family collection acquired in Munich, Germany, 1965-1972, thence by descent.
