Her art, full of mysterious and sensual motifs, explored themes of femininity, sexuality, power, as well as mythology and fantasy. Her works often depicted hybrid creatures, such as sphinxes (women with feline features), and reversed traditional gender roles, showing dominant women and gentle, submissive men.Her life was as extravagant as her art. She was known for her unconventional lifestyle, wearing theatrical costumes, her fascination with cats (of which she bred many) and her dislike of the patriarchy, which was evident both in her private life and in her art.
