Lethal Luristan Bronze Axe head

Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A beautiful cast-bronze axe head with a lengthy triangular blade, a narrow shoulder, a cylindrical socketing shaft with four protruding ribs, and a quartet of knob-headed spikes extending from the back. This elaborate axe head was made in a single cast utilizing the lost wax (cire perdue) technique, an oft-chosen method of armament creation by ancient Luristan blacksmiths. Size: 8.375" L x 3.9" H (21.3 cm x 9.9 cm); 5.8" H (14.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Zaveloff collection, Lakewood, New Jersey, USA, exported from Israel in July 2010
