Lg 1896 Luminist Marine Oil Signed Illegibly w Prov, Arts and Crafts Movement Seascape Composition or Pirate Marine Illustration with a Galleon in a Harbor Sunset, oil on canvas, 24 x 36 inches, 33.5 x 45.5 x 4 inches overall framed, illegible but distinctive signature and 1896 date lower left, framed. Please see detail images, we believe this may be Massachusetts nautical painter Thomas F. Davidson d. 1921 who sold a similarly formatted and proportioned oil of the Return of the HMS Victory from Trafalgar naval painting at an English Sothebys auction for USD6,565 in 2018 ref AskArt however the present work is more stylized. Provenance: Georges Chapellier was a Belgian art dealer who came from London to America after WWI and opened a gallery in New York. His estate was inherited by three daughters in 1978. A portion of the estate was descended to John Rosenberger who operated Rosenberger Galleries on Long Island. By descent in the Long Island family. All Chapellier labeled and or exhibited items descend from the Georges Chapellier Estate while some items only cited as Rosenberger or uncited such as this lot may have other sources by Rosenberger prior to inheritance by the Long Island family.
