Lincolnshire Abbot's Sermons.- Gilbertus de Hoilandia. Sermones super Cantica canticorum, collation: a10 b-k A-H8 I6 K8, the first and last ff. blank, 160 ff., 34 lines, Roman type, a2 seven-line initial in red and initial strokes in red, a6 three-line initial in red, initial spaces, some with guide-letters, a few instances of later ink marginalia and underlining, most extensive to a6, occasional spotting and light staining, the odd minor wormhole, mostly marginal, later vellum, gilt title to spine, small chip out of vellum near foot of spine, section of vellum missing from outer edge of lower cover, repair to upper left corner of upper cover, rubbed, small folio (250 x 183mm.), Florence, Nicolaus Laurentii, 16 April, 1485.

⁂ A rare copy at auction of sermons by this English Cistercian, who was Abbot of Swineshead, Holland, Lincolnshire. The work explores the themes and meanings of the Song of Songs, and was continuing an unfinished work by Bernard of Clairvaux. Later John of Ford would complete it.
