Lombard school of the XVI-XVII Century - The Descent from the Cross

[ translate ]

\Artist: Lombard school of the XVI-XVII Century
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 91_65_0_cm
Italian School from the early 1600s. “La "Descente de croix" Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus climb a ladder to untie the dead Christ. Saint John is depicted at the foot of the cross, he supports the lower body of Christ while the Virgin, Mary Magdalene and two holy women are represented in the lower area. Dynamic composition, which gives an impression of movement and great tension where the female characters express all the forms of the most exacerbated pain: from the Virgin represented fainting in the arms of Mary Magdalene, to the holy women who soar towards the Virgin, arms wide open in a gesture of very strong dramatic tension. The choice of the chromatic range in the only gradations of brown, ochre, yellow, if not a few touches of bright colours (the red of the drapes of the male characters) blurs the contours between the background and the form, between a character and another to further strengthen the desired dramatic effect. The perception of the different characters, at the level of the upper part in particular, is not obvious and requires a certain effort of the gaze so that the figures emerge. The face of Christ leaning to the right side is barely readable. The wear related to time has further reinforced this effect sought by the painter to unify content and form by further attenuating any form of precise demarcation between one form and the other, which thus gives the painting a most interesting unfinished appearance. Oil on canvas (doubled) . Frame from a later period not included in the sale but offered free of charge to the purchaser. Provenance: Milanese private collection Professional packaging and secure shipment with tracking number.
