Voyages and Travels of an Indian Interpreter and Trader, Describing the Manners and Customs of the North American Indians. London: Printed for the Author and sold by Robson et al., 1791.First edition, large quarto, [pi]3, A-Z4, Aa-Pp4, illustrated with large folding engraved map of Canada, contents very good, some marginal tears to title page with loss of blank margin at gutter and top, bound in diced russia, front cover detached, ex libris Mary Montgomerie, with her armorial bookplate inside front board, 10 3/4 x 8 1/2 in.Sabin 41878; Streeter VI 3651; Lande 1289; Howes L443; ESTC T122592; http://estc.bl.uk/T122592.Long traded and lived with Native Americans for nineteen years in Canada and the Great Lakes region. His extensive vocabularies of indigenous languages, although collected for the purpose of furthering trade, contain valuable information regarding the Chippewa language, which he found the most useful language when communicating with members of the Five and Six Nations. Long also includes tables of words in Mohegan and Shawnee, making use of the work of Edwards and Carver. Field describes Long's Voyages and Travels as "characterized by candor and intelligence."
