Lot of 2 Syro Hittite Pottery Bull Figures

Ancient Near East, Northern Syria, Syro-Hittite culture, ca. mid-3rd to mid-2nd millennium BCE. A wonderful pair of hand-built pottery bull figurines that exhibit nearly identical characteristics. Each bull features a stocky body with a quartet of conical legs, a folded tail, and a raised neck that supports the head. The tapered bovine faces feature lightly pinched snouts and a pair of thick horns, with one set projecting skyward, and one set pointing slightly forward. The taller bull perhaps represents the mother animal, and the bull with forward-facing horns bears faint traces of one eye and a spotted pattern on the body. Size of largest (mother): 2.7" L x 2.4" H (6.9 cm x 6.1 cm); 3.625" H (9.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Vero Beach, Florida, USA collection, acquired in August 1992; ex-Chris Martin collection, London, UK

Condition Report: Both creatures repaired from multiple large pieces, with light resurfacing along break lines. Chips and abrasions to legs, bodies, horns, and heads of both bulls, with light encrustations, and fading to original pigmentation. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
