Lot of 3 Greek Canosan Pottery Heads of Goddesses

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, Canosa, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A lovely group of three mold-formed pottery heads depicting females, perhaps goddesses. The shortest head bears a stern guise, a piercing gaze, and broad coiffure rows decorated with impressed stippling. The second head is slender in form with a narrow nose, heavy-lidded eyes, and a tall forehead surmounted by an upswept coiffure terminating with five conical bangs draped over top. The largest head has a wide neck, rounded cheeks, full lips, gentle eyes, and a puffy, centrally-parted coiffure. All three heads bear traces of thick white and red-orange pigmentation that suggests they were at one time painted with vivid colors. A wonderful gathering from ancient Canosa! Size of largest (wide neck): 1.75" W x 2.2" H (4.4 cm x 5.6 cm); 5.3" H (13.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition Report: All items are fragments of larger sculptures. Each head has small chips to nose, cheeks, neck, and coiffure, with softening to some finer details, fading to original pigmentation, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and traces of original pigment throughout.
