Lot of 3 Roman & European Medieval Iron Chisels

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century; Western Europe, Medieval period, ca. 12th to 15th century CE. A gathering of three formed-iron chisels with conical socketing shafts, thick necks, and sturdy blade heads with sharp edges. The two larger chisels are Roman in origin and have wide blade heads that could chip and scrape large swaths of material with ease. The third chisel is of Medieval European origin and has a narrow blade head. All three items are covered in wonderful patina. Size of largest (Roman): 2.2" W x 4.7" H (5.6 cm x 11.9 cm); 6.8" H (17.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in November 2008; ex-private American collection

Condition Report: All items professionally cleaned and conserved. Each item has chipping and pitting to socketing shaft, neck, and blade head, with slight bending to overall forms of blade heads, and light encrustations. Nice patina throughout.
