LOT 0074A

Lot of 4 Oil Lamps - Holy Land, Roman & Greek

[ translate ]

First, Ancient Near East, Holy Land, Middle Bronze Age I-II, ca. 2200 to 1750 BCE. A single-spouted pottery lamp made from a creamy colored clay and hand-molded, with a pinched spout and a rounded base. Its unsteadiness on a modern table suggests that it may have been made to be placed in sand. Also, three Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE oil lamps. One is in the style of those known from Ephesus, western Turkey, with a kettle-shaped form around a central opening. Another features a sunken discus with a profile bust of a bearded man and a flaring spout. The last is of the style known from Roman North Africa, featuring a long spout with a deep channel leading from it to the discus; the discus features a portrait bust of the god Mercury with his winged hat. A short, nub-like handle projects from the back of the vessel. Size of largest (Holy Land): 4.25" W x 1.65" H (10.8 cm x 4.2 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired around 1994 to 1999; ex-Tom Cederlind collection, Portland, Oregon, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
