Louis AMATEIS: Bronze - Woman on Rollerskates

Bronze of a nude girl on rollerskates, by Louis Amateis (American, b. Italy, 1855-1913). Signed "L. Amateis, Washington, D.C. / F. Bruno Fuse, Roma". Louis Amateis, a sculptor who studied at the Royal Academy, Turin, and in Paris and Milan, came to the U.S. in 1884, and settled in Washington, DC. Showing at Exhibitions in Buffalo and St. Louis around the turn of the 20th century, and a member of several prominent Sculptor's Societies in the U.S., he was commissioned to sculpt a number of public monuments, including a monument to soldiers of the war of 1836, at Galveston, Tex.; Baldwin Memorial, at Milford, CT; "Qualities of Womanhood" (5 low-relief sculptures in the west side of Hearst Hall on Washington Cathedral grounds), in 1900; Heurich Memorial in Rock Creek Cemetery, 1895; busts of President Chester A. Arthur, James G. Blaine, Andrew Carnegie, and Generals Hancock, Logan and Butler; and bronze doors for the U.S. Capitol (contracted for in 1904; not installed until 1978). Mr. Amateis was also a founder of the School of Architecture and Fine Arts of Columbia (now George Washington University). [38 1/2 x 28 x 17 inches; Base: 16 1/2 x 12 1/4 inches].
