[ translate ]

Louisiana Carved Cherrywood Armoire , early 19th c., later ogee cornice, flush panel doors, reeded center stile, shelf interior with later medial belt of drawers, serpentine apron, cabriole legs , h. 90 1/2 in., w. 61 1/2 in., d. 23 in Note: The flush panel doors on the armoire offered here are a common feature of Louisiana armoires made by émigré cabinetmakers who settled in Louisiana from St. Domingue after the 1804 revolution. Flush panel armoires, exhibiting the same French influence of the present lot, have been found throughout the West Indies and a small number of St. Domingue examples still survive. An armoire with St. Domingue documentation, shown in a 1978 catalogue from the Schwarz Gallery of Philadelphia, is similar in its overall form as the armoire offered here. The present lot is closely related to a group of émigré-attributed armoires, all with flush panel doors, illustrated in Furnishing Louisiana: Creole and Acadian Furniture 1735-1835.
Ref. Holden, Jack, et al. Furnishing Louisiana: Creole and Acadian Furniture 1735-1835. New Orleans: The Historic New Orleans Collection, 2010, pp. 129, 134-138.
