Lovely Inca Blackware Portrait Vessel

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1438 to 1533 CE. A fine example of a hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel featuring the portrait of a distinguished individual. Enveloped in a lustrous black glaze, the fascinating vessel displays a stylized visage with heavy lidded, almond-shaped eyes, a pointed nose, full lips, and a jutting chin boasting a projecting labret, all supported by a conical foot. A centrally parted coiffure tops the figure, as a tubular spout rises from his head with a ribbon-form handle looping from the spout to the back of the head. Petite ears flank the face, each pierced with an annular drill hole which would have been used for suspending ornaments. Size: 7.125" in diameter x 8" H (18.1 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Drimmer collection, Florida, USA, before 1965

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
