Lovely Roman Glass Vase w/ Twin Trailed Handles

[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A beautiful vase of a voluminous form, free-blown from semi-translucent glass of a vibrant yellow hue. The vessel presents with a concave base with a smooth pontil scar, a rotund piriform body with a compressed shoulder, a wide funnel-form mouth, and a pair of applied trailed loop handles arching between neck and shoulder. The thick interior encrustations have formed attractive silvery patina that is visible from the exterior, and faint areas of rainbow-hued iridescence add a light chromatic burst to the marigold vessel. A fabulous example from ancient Rome! Size: 2.8" W x 4.375" H (7.1 cm x 11.1 cm).

Provenance: private Alabama, USA collection; ex-Roy Green collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#148670
Condition Report: Minor abrasions to base, body, and rim, with micro-bubbling within glass matrix, and heavy encrustations within interior, otherwise intact and very good. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Nice earthen deposits and fabulous iridescence throughout. Old inventory label and inventory number written in red ink beneath base.
