Ludovico was an eclectic artist, with a beautiful hand, broad and up-to-date artistic culture (and not only artistic, as evidenced by the inventory of his library) , and a complete academic background. Unlike the customs of Roman painting in the 18th century, he rejected any specialization, engaging with equal commitment and equally brilliant results in all types and genres of painting: from altarpieces to frescoes, from historical paintings to portraits, from still lifes to animal painting. His career, apparently, took place entirely in Rome, and in fact, his painting reveals a thorough knowledge of 17th and 18th-century Roman painting. His constant points of reference were, on one hand, the works of Guido Reni, of whom he was often a copyist, and on the other, the masters of the so-called Roman Baroque, such as Baciccio, Ludovico Gimignani, Borgognone, Maratti, Luti. But above all, he engaged with the art of the leading exponents of Roman Rococo, such as Trevisani, Mazzanti, Ricciolini, Imperiali, Benefial, Pozzi, becoming, alongside Giaquinto, Conca, Michele Rocca, a leading figure of that Italian variant of Rococo painting, characterized by delicate and luminous tones, light brushstrokes, an educated style, skillfully decorative, free and lively. Certainly, in the short twenty-year period from the early 1740s to the end of the 1750s, Stern rose to a very prominent role (also thanks to the generational change that gradually, during the 1740s, saw Pietro Bianchi, Imperiali, Trevisani, Casali, and Subleyras fade out, for one reason or another) , working for the most prominent patrons and becoming the most requested painter of altarpieces.
High-ranking, although numerically limited, was then his commitment to decorative cycles intended for noble residences, culminating in his masterpiece, the four murals depicting the Continents in the Room of the Four Parts of the World at Palazzo Borghese, commissioned by Prince Paolo Borghese Aldobrandini. His mature painting finally displays characteristics of refined coloristic qualities, succinctness of brushwork, and essentiality.
