Lyonel Feininger (German/American, 1871-1956)

Two Marine Views: Hafen (Kriegsschiff in der Hafeneinfahrt), 1918, posthumous edition of 100 from 1964, published by Associated American Artists, New York (Prasse, W110; AAA/Czestochowski, 1964.013); and Schiffe (drei Segelschiffe), 1919, posthumous edition of 100 from c. 1964 (Prasse, W151II). Both unsigned and with Lyonel and Julia Feininger dry stamp l.r., Hafen numbered "23/100" in pencil l.l. and Schiffe numbered "88/100" in pencil l.l. Woodcuts on thin Japan paper, image sizes to 9 7/8 x 10 3/4 in. (25.1 x 27.3 cm), unmatted, unframed.
Condition: Margins over 2 3/4 inches.

Provenance: Both purchased from William Greenbaum Fine Prints, Gloucester, Massachusetts, 2005, to the current private western Massachusetts collection.

N.B. A series of posthumous Feininger woodcuts was printed at Gehenna Press, Northampton, Massachusetts, by Harold McGrath, under the supervision of artist Leonard Baskin.

Hafen image measures 6 3/8 x 8 5/8 in. and the margins are all over 2 3/4 inches. The other has margins over 4 inches.
