The present work appears to based on a composition after John Vanderbank in the Barnstaple town council collection.
The canvas has been relined. The paint surface appears sound with a recent glossy varnish. Ultraviolet reveals traces of retouching to the background, upper left and a spot lower right; further traces to old frame abrasions along the lower border, however the aforementioned varnish prevents further reading.
