First combined ed. of two of the best known treatises of the Dutch engineer and mathematician Samuel Marolois (1572-1627): one on geometry and the other on fortification. His Geometria, here ed. by Th. Verbeeck, presents a thorough pictorial course of all aspects of geometry and its application to measurement, proportion, surveying, perspective, etc. It treats specifically the application of geometry to architecture and fortification. His "Fortification ou architecture militaire", here edited by the Leiden professor Fr. van Schoten (1581-1645) is a richly illustrated important source for the Dutch art of fortification at the beginning of the 17th c. Woodcut mark on title and part titles. 17 folding engravings, 1 fold. table, 1 text engraving, and numerous woodcut ill. or diagrams. The woodcut illustrations in the text show many corners of fortresses with measurements of their angles and various calculations, but also some ground plans and tools for constructing a fortress. The engraved plates show complete ground plans of fortresses; the last plate depicts different types of cannons. Prov. Old name on title. - A few old annotations. Ref.
