[ translate ]

ORIGINAL DEERSKIN SHEATH. This exact knife is pictured on page 222 of “Confederate Bowie Knives” 2012 by Melton Phillips, Sexton. This unique knife measures 24 1/4” overall, has clip point blade 19 1/4”, the sheath is stitched deerskin still w/ hair attached. This is the only knife noted by Authors w/ a deerskin scabbard that is thought to be Confederate & not early American. The wood grip is carved in a very folky flavor. The wrought iron D-Guard has a well formed loop at the quillon. The pommel is unusual in that the tang is simply bent over tightly & not peened. CONDITION: very good overall. Guard is still tight & not moving. The blade is overall gray/bright still exhibiting original finishing marks w/ some grime & staining. Scabbard has shrunk & is quite dry, knife has to be forced in sheath which is missing last few inches. A sewn belt loop is missing. Two lg. hairlines in grip unaffecting aesthetic. PROVENANCE: Ex- Dan Schneider Collection Los Angelos; Ex- Wayne McNeese Collection 2003. (02-13622/JS). $3,000-4,000.
