Sunrise Departure of the Fishing Fleet, oil on canvas, signed lower right and dated 1870, housed in a magnificent Victorian deep cove gold gesso frame, 21" x 29", SS: 9 1/2" x 17 1/2". Cleaned, fine craquelure.De Haas followed the classical path of a mid-19th c. successful and socially prominent artist. Born in Rotterdam, he studied at the Academy there and at the Hague, briefly in London, but ultimately settling in New York under the sponsorship of August Belmont, who had been Minister of the United States at The Hague (and later namesake of the Belmont Stakes). By 1863 De Haas was an Associate of the National Academy. Provenance: From a Private Collection.
