MAXIMILIAN OF MEXICO; EMPEROR. Partly-printed Document Signed, "Maximiliano," as Emperor, awarding Matias Hönig of the Austrian Legion a Military Merit Medal for heroism during the capture of Teziutlán on February 6, 1865, in Spanish. Countersigned by Minister of Foreign Affairs José Fernando Ramíez. 16 1/4x11 1/2 inches; brittling to edges with some chipping at lower and right edges, vertical fold through signature (with minor loss), scattered repairs to folds with tissue verso, remnants of prior mounting at side edges verso, faint marginal discoloration from prior matting, docketing and Mexican imperial ink stamp on verso. "Palace of Mexico" [Mexico City], 24 February 1865

As part of the continuing effort to expand French rule in Mexico, Imperialist forces (including the Austrian Legion) under the command of Count Franz Thun-Hohenstein attacked Teziutlán in February of 1865. The Republican troops of the town's garrison, commanded by General Jesús González Ortega, were surprised, allowing the occupation of Teziutlán after a brief resistance on the morning of February 5.
