MEDAL, FLAG AND RELIC GROUPING OF USMC BRIGADIER GENERAL ROBERT B. CARNEY JR.

ROBERT B. CARNEY JR. (1919-1983) USMC brigadier general who joined the Marine Corps in 1941 and was commissioned in April 1942. Carney participated in the Bougainville Campaign and commanded a company of the Fourth Marine Division on Iwo Jima, where he led an assault on Mount Suribachi. For his bravery there, Carney was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He served as assistant division commander of the Third Marine Division during the Vietnam War, where he established the perimeter defenses at Quand Tri Combat Base and led assaults against the NVA. Carney then commanded the 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade on Okinawa from 1968 to 1969. An important estate grouping of Carney's sixteen medals and other personal effects, including: One ribbon bar bearing six medals, including [from left to right]: his Legion of Merit medal (with "V" device); Bronze Star Medal (with "V" device); Marine Corps Commendation medal (with silver star); unengraved Purple Heart medal; American Defense Service Medal; and American Campaign Medal. WITH: A second ribbon bar holding seven medals, including [from left to right]: his Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal; World War II Victory Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal; China Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; and Vietnam Combat Medal. WITH: A miniature medal bar holding six miniatures, including [from left to right]: his Legion of Merit medal (with "V" device); Bronze Star Medal (with "V" device); Marine Corps Commendation medal (with gold star); unengraved Purple Heart medal; American Defense Service Medal; and American Campaign Medal. WITH: A second miniature medal bar holding seven miniatures, including [from left to right]: his Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal (with four service stars); World War II Victory Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal; China Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal (with one service star); Vietnam Service Medal (with one service star); and Vietnam Combat Medal (with 1960- Device). WITH: Three additional medals, each in original presentation box, including South Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, South Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Silver Star, and one unidentified. WITH: approx. 30-50 brass uniform buttons, each with patriotic or military motifs, and various other badges, pips, cuff links, or metal insignia, including many from the Chinese People's Liberation Army. WITH: Carney's white USMC officer's hat with matching insignia at front, bearing an oak leaf motif constructed of gold or brass bullion atop the brim. An ink stamp on the slightly damaged leather sweatband and an original tag on the side of the inside indicate it is sized 6 7/8". A flap on the inside bears a "Berkshire Caps" trademark stamp, while the identification label therein reads "Brig. Gen. R.B. Carney" in blue ink, presumably written in Carney's hand. WITH: two of Carney's brigadier general's flags, each 52.5 x 70 in. with 1.5 in. gold fringe on all edges, each bearing one white five-pointed star stitched centrally on a red field; a presentation 8" x 11" painted wooden plaque bearing the insignia of the Ninth Marines in relief above an engraved plaque: "TO BGEN R.B. CARNEY, USMC from the Ninth Marines"; and various photographs and paper materials related to his service. These items are all housed within Carney's original wooden military footlocker, 30 x 17 x 12.5 in., bearing his name: "Brig. Gen. R.B. Carney Jr....010675...USMC" in white paint. The bottom of the lid bears the black manufacturer's label, reading in part: "TRUCK, LOCKER, FOOT. BARRACKS w/TRAY...ELLIOT ENGINEERING ENTERPRISES". Slight damage to the interior tray, else very good condition.
