Technique: Tempera\Signature: Not signed
Siena master, follower of Duccio di Boninsegna, already identified with Ugolino di Nerio. A work from the early fourteenth century, with extensive restorations and 19th-century repainting, an aspect we have taken into account in the reserve price. Tempera on panel. 55. 5 x 36 cm. Documents of authenticity and critical studies: - Authentication and critical study by Prof. Rolando Bellini, 2020. - Publication on the catalogue of Phillips Son & Neale, April 1991, as "Follower of Ugolino di Nerio", lot 181, estimate 25 - 30,000 pounds, auction Fine Old Master Paintings: To be Sold by Auction Tuesday, 16 April 1991 at 11 Am and 2. 30 Pm by Phillips Son & Neale (London, England) . The catalogue of the aforementioned auction has been digitized by the University of Michigan and is accessible online via the Google Books search engine by typing the indicated parameters. Features: The work has multiple stylistic and iconographic features that place it within the followers of Duccio di Boninsegna, famous Siena painter of the late thirteenth century. In particular, the work shows a direct and unequivocal relationship with two masterpieces certainly attributed to Duccio's hand: the Madonna of Crevole, dated 1283-84 (from Pieve of Santa Cecilia in Crevole, now preserved at the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo di Siena) and the Madonna Gualino, dated 1280-83 (preserved at the Galleria Sabauda in Turin) . The fundamental element that unites these works is the almost identical reproduction of the features of the face of the Child Jesus, such as to suggest the use of the same preparatory drawings, a common operation also found within the workshops of the thirteenth century and fourteenth [photo comparison shown here among the photos: on the left the Child of the Madonna di Crevole] . Condition: two series of restorations with extensive repainting: the first intervention probably dates back to the nineteenth century, the second to the twentieth century. The oldest intervention results in a near-total repainting of the cloak and dark areas, while the light parts and complexions are affected by more limited surface interventions. The 20th-century restoration work was carried out with a dotted technique and is clearly visible in the photos, especially in some portions near the halo. It reinstates some limited losses of colour. The wooden support is entirely original and the restorations of the surface are all perfectly identifiable by diagnostics. The work has obtained the certificate of Free International Circulation to leave Italy in the year 2017 and can be sold worldwide. #Exclusive. Artweek
