Manner of Paolo Veronese,
Italian, 19th century-
Feast at the House of Simon the Pharisee;
oil on canvas, 49 x 39.5 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
As told by Luke, 7, 36-50, the story narrates that Simon invited Christ to dinner to challenge him on points of Jewish Law. Mary Magdalene, also present, washed Christ’s feet with her tears and hair, and covered them with ointment.
Veronese (1528-1588) treated the subject on a number of occasions. The present work likely derives from his version held at the Château de Versailles, particularly in the positioning of Mary Magdalen, the dismayed stare of the seated Pharisees, and the classical architecture in the background.
