Marc Chagall's Le Cirque d'Izes - Signed, 5 Lithographs by Chagall, 76 Heliogravure Photographs by Izis

This finely illustrated volume is Marc Chagall's Le Cirque d'Izes. It was published in Monte Carlo by Andre Sauret in 1965. The text was completed by Jacques Prevert.

It is signed by Chagall on the pre-title. There are four original lithographs by Chagall in the volume, with another in duplicate loosely inserted with hand-written alternate poetic description of Grock. It contains 76 heliogravure photographs by Izis. Bound in illustrated hardcover.

Israel ("Izis") Bidermans was a Parisian photographer. This work is of his photography of French circuses. "Izis was a great dreamer and a wanderer both of the streets and in his mind. He believed in photographs that seemed simple, but were in fact full of ambience, a 'poetic realism' that was much in vogue. His vision was gentle and warm without being sentimental." (New York Times) "The sense of Existential isolation [of circus performers from the rest of society] is handled with sensitivity and empathy by Izis, who makes what might be just another hackneyed view of a popularly exotic subject into something profound, moving and extraordinary." (Parr & Badger I:222)

Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was a Belarusian-French artist. His given name was Moishe Segal and was born in Belarus which was part of the Russian empire. His art was influenced by Symbolism, Fauvism, Cubism, and Surrealism. The art critic, Robert Hughes, described Chagall as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century.
