Margaret Hortter Sampler, Philadelphia, 1812

[ translate ]

Margaret Hortter’s Needlework Sampler, dated 1812 (Margaret was 11 at the time). The sampler includes a cow in a green field, a tree and a basket flanked by 2 birds. There is a meandering vine border with flowers. It measures 9 1/8” x 14 ¾” (sight) and is framed in a contemporary (but very appropriate) 10 ¾” x 16” frame. It is in very fine condition with no rips or tears or evidence of spotting. The only missing stitches that are evident are in the sweeping branches of the tree (on the left side, one of the branches is done in brown thread with some small sections missing; this was probably re-stitched at some point!). The cow (which may be a horse!) is primitive, but complete.; According to the biographical information written on brown paper attached to the back (from an old frame): Margaret Red Hortter was born in Germantown (a section of Philadelphia) in 1801 and died in 1898. She married a Peter Bechtel (1799-1842). There is also an interesting note written on the back about a Jacob Hortter Bechtel, who apparently was killed in Richmond “by a Yankee Sniper” in 1864. I was able to find information on such a person who apparently WAS killed in Richmond, but I have not found any connection (other than the Bechtel name) to Margaret or her husband. Some detective work might make this a very interesting piece. Additional genealogical information on Margaret (including photos of pictures) and her husband will be included.
