He grew up in Whittier, California and studied drawing and painting at California State University, Fullerton. He moved to New York in 1982 and in 1984 became a prominent figure in the East Village art scene ,Kostabi is best known for his paintings of faceless figures, which often comment on contemporary political, social and psychological issues, and whose stylistic roots lie in the works of Giorgio de Chirico and Fernand Léger .
