Markham Pottery - National City CA 1913 - 1921; Markham

[ translate ]

Markham Pottery began in Ann Arbor MI when Herman Markham, a salesman and devoted rose enthusiast began making pottery for his cut roses. In 1905 he began commercial production with his son. In 1913 the business moved to National City CA (near San Diego). According to Paul Evans in Art Pottery of the United States, pieces with numbers over 6000 were made in National City. This piece is numbered 6711. The production in National City lasted only up to 1921.
Like much of Markham's production, this piece has a very subtle textured glaze, in tones of brown, a copper with a metallic appearance, and green. The texture is quite varied, giving the piece a great Arts and Crafts feel.
Excellent condition, with a couple of tiny spots where the clay shows through and a tiny spot where the glaze appears to have a whitish spot. We consider these "in the making," not flaws. The piece has no chips, cracks or restoration.
Marked with the incised script Markham signature and the number 6711.
Measures about 2 3/4" tall by about 3 1/4" diameter.
