Rare SAMAKUN Mask of Bambara - Mali. This ritual mask "elephant head" was placed on a building that evoked the body of an elephant. During the SAMADOO rite, a crucial step in the initiation to the Jo, the neophytes symbolically enter the body of the elephant, to gain strength and wisdom. Very typical piece of Bamana style, raw, elemental, powerful and very modern plastic. Beautiful natural patina, Bougouni region. Rare. See similar piece in book "Bamana" by J. P.
