Mask (1) - Wood - Congo DRC - 1st half 20th century
Large KAYAMBA mask of the Lega Rare mask, only found in some Lega villages. Originally it was completely white. . . Its current state testifies to its antiquity. . . It is also the only Lega mask, only intended for dance. For this one, the dancers were completely covered with a white cloth and mimed scenes involving dangerous and undesirable foreigners. Very stylized construction of the mask; dominated by two large central ears (and not by horns !) , to better listen to everything that happens. These are directly connected to the nose to better "feel". As for the eyes, they are wide open. . . to see ! And the mouth is half-open to dialogue with the spirits. And here is revealed the true meaning of this mask, medium with the invisible.
